Sinclair Z.12 (1966)

The Z.12 was an early addition to my home made disco unit, it's power pack was solid state regulated 12v and just like the amp was very un-reliable, I can remember  one gig I did at the Selly Oak Conservatives club I had to use a car battery to power it when it fail one night. I read later that Sinclair had used rejected transistors, because they kept the costs down. The advertised power rating was another number picked from the sky to sell the unit, looking back I think it was around 7-10 watts maximum output power, but with my home made speaker cabinets they rattled to hell anyway. One thing for sure was I got through lots of tweeters, I used to wire them in series to spread the power and I carried a jumper cable to short one out when it went open circuit.
My early DJ console with Sinclair amp, it used 2 x 1950s Collaro auto changers modified for single use and re-spayed diamond white with TC8 crystal cartridges, you could never find two with the same volume, nightmare! The cheap moving coil microphone was useless, I later found a 2nd hand Shure one. It this time I had just enrolled in Matthew Boulton Technical Collage for a radio & television courses and also Ham radio theory. So my building skill and know how improved as the years went by.
