Philco 200 'Transitone' LW + MW UK transistor 1960

After looking for what seems like for ever I just can't find another example of this UK made 6 transistor 1960 radio anywhere, so it's the only example now on-line. Philco are a Philadelphia company that I believe set up factory's in London and Paris and used local parts and labour to build them. Many companies did this in order to sell there produce in other countries, Philips being the main one that comes to mind. I did however find a circuit diagram, but didn't really need it. When I picked this up it was in a very sorry state, the back had broke off, the brass was showing 60 years of tarnish and the plastic cabinet and tuning dial were badly scratched.

the repair
All the scratches came good with Graygate paste polishing No.5. Oh the other hurdle was the stand, it came with only one end. I used that for a template and cut out another using soft plastic that I use for 1920s  radio tops, looks just like Bakelite and comes in many colours. I made a crossbar and spay painted them white to match the one end I had. The whole thing balances on the band-switch and volume control spindles nicely.
One of the wires to the medium wave coil had fell off and the earth to the car aerial socket was missing and I needed to fit 2 x 6 volt battery packs using 4 x 1.5 v in each pack, this will have a similar weight as the original PP6 and help with the balance on it's cradle stand. In all I spent most of my time cleaning the brass centre to the tuning dial, making the stand was easy with a coping saw.

How I found it
