Defiant P.S.H. 255 ACB

Not a great fan of attache case radios simply because they all suffer from internal bad design syndrome, this one however is a joy. The above close-up of my Defiant gave me much grief as the nap of the tartan caused havoc with pixel patterning, but I finally found a  size that was view-able. The radio came from a small seaside town SE of Edinburgh called Longniddry.
Longniddry, East Lothian, days gone by
I have looked everywhere on-lin for a circuit or even another example of this fine built radio, but to no avail. Perhaps it was made for a clansman as a test product, who knows, but it's very well built inside, so my guess is it came out under another brand name. Plessey took over the Co-Op owned Defiant name in the mid-30's I believe, perhaps it was them If anybody recognises it please let me know.
The repair
She was working fine!! just needed a new mains cable, cut short by a charity shop I expect. I also added a display light by using the 30 AC feed to the heater of the mains rectifier valve using a 36 volt flat bulb I already had in my spares box.
The inside is opened up by a screw mounted by the carry handle ind hinges up via 2 clips, it has two wires going into the lid for the loop aerial and a small groove in the edge for the mains cable. These sets were quite dangerous when fitting battery's with the mains still plugged in, so a red warning label is displayed inside the case, I thing outside would have been safer. Battery wise it uses a 90 volt HT battery and a 7.5 volt heater, neither of which still exist. (Eveready B126/ AD53.)
Quite heavy, but not overlarge The cabinet was quite grubby, so I went over with Ajax powder and soapy water with a toothbrush. It covering is a printed plastic coated type of Rexine. Great skill was done by the unknown cabinet maker covering the unit without the pencil line pattern being broken.
