Siera SA6128 LW, MW, & FM radio, Belgium, 1961. Also produced in Austria as Hornyphon Arabella, and Philips as Holiday L3W11T /30F. All appear to have been manufactured by Philips, the labels inside are typical philips text & design. This radio says; 'look at me ain't I sexy', lol. Arrived today from Belgium, just needed a new loud speaker. I paid more than normal for this faulty radio as it's sexy body won me over. Early example of an FM portable. FM was launched in UK on 2nd May, 1955 but was mainly used in radio grams then (64 years to the day I repaired this).
When there was silence from the 6 x R14 small torch type batteries I checked the earphone socket (doggy - so cleaned contacts) then I found the loudspeaker was open circuit winding. After removing it I could see rust on the feed cable and tried to repair by fitting a link with hair thin wire, but still u/s so replaced it with a smaller one I had to hand.

Rusted coil wire feed on speaker disc. |
The bottom section comes away to reveal the detachable battery box cover, also one screw in the rear removes back cover. The back screw also releases the front with speaker after delicately removing tuning dial and indicator bar (line up with slot in center shape to remove).

The four corners of the top of the cabinet have had the vinyl covering rubbed away by the carry handle over time, so I filled the bald patches with acrylic paste filler and painted over that. Just need to touch-up the lighter corners now with some cream coloured paint. Telescopic aerial needed cleaning with wire wool and rubbed with a drop of oil. The radio needed no other components fitted, I just cleaned the on/off switch with ambersol and job was done.

No need to remove printed circuit screws as I did here, the front falls away as soon as you remove dial |
a real looker - very sexy indeed...
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm glad it was not just me that thought so :-)
