Ekco PT399 'Rhinestone radio' 1962

Simple hand size pocket radio came in 2 designs; one with speaker cloth and 1 row of stones and this rarer multi-stone version, both with same circuit. The LW was just factory tuned to 1500 meters the Light program in UK. Uses 6 germanium transistors of the Newmarket oval types as shown in circuit below.

The repair
C12, AGC decoupling capacitor was faulty causing whistling and the tuning capacitor was shorting out in some areas of tuning, both were replaced. The tuning control knob had to be modified to fit the replacement unit. The battery terminals were also missing and replaced.

Next came minor repairs to the cabinet; a fixing bolt had broke loose, speaker needed gluing, and corner of volume control housing was missing.  So I remoulded a piece in and filed to shape when dry. All the Rhinestones were complete and just needed a polish and the set was a runner after re-assemble. The stones are found near the river Rhine, hence the name, a form of crystal, not valuable. No extra space inside cabinet for bigger parts so make sure new bits are smaller or the same size. The designer was a space genius, even if the modern battery is 1mm longer it wont fit, in my case it was the new terminal clip was a little bigger.
